What do email verification statuses mean?

Emails found with Anymail Finder are already verified. Use the Email Verifier to check emails sourced elsewhere or to re-verify older email addresses before sending.

When verifying emails, Anymail Finder can return one of the following statuses:

VALID

Safe to send.

Exists and can receive emails. Passed SMTP and advanced verification checks, including checks that work on catch-all domains.

Credits used: Yes - 0.2 credits.

Recommendation: Safe to use for all campaigns and primary sending.

RISKY

Use with caution.

We're unable to determine with certainty whether the email is valid or invalid because the domain may be using catch-all, greylisting, or similar protections.

Credits used: Yes - 0.2 credits.

Recommendation: Use cautiously for low-volume or secondary sending.

INVALID

Do not send.

Does not exist or cannot receive emails.

Credits used: Yes - 0.2 credits.

Recommendation: Remove from your list to avoid bounces and protect your sender reputation.

How does Anymail Finder handle catch-all domains?

Some domains are configured as catch-all, meaning they accept emails for any address, even if the mailbox doesn't exist.

When Anymail Finder detects a catch-all domain, we apply additional verification signals beyond basic SMTP checks:

  • If we're able to confidently assess deliverability, the email is marked as VALID or INVALID
  • If the domain prevents reliable verification, the email is marked as RISKY
